The Spammers are getting Smarter!

Posted: Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 by Gene

There’s been a recent new spam outbreak that is sending out messages from an email address at your domain (they’re using spoofing so it looks like it’s coming from your domain but it really isn’t) that is giving a link to something like: http://yourdomainname.com/owa/service_directory/settings.php?email=stringern@yourdomainnamecom&from=yourdomainname.com&fromname=stringern

Do NOT click on the link!  In the case of the link above, the link actually goes to:

Notice how it doesn’t really end with yourdomainname.com but nerrassb.eu?  This is someone trying to trick you into clicking on the link thinking you needed to do something to keep getting mail.  This is spam and could lead you into doing something very bad to your PC including possibly infecting it with a worm, virus or trojan horse.

The good news, so far, is that the domain nerrassb.eu isn’t registered or has been removed from the internet already but it stands as an excellent case study on how the spammers are working to get you to click on links and get possible control of your computers.

Here’s the full email message without the link:
