How to Backup, Wipe and Activate a Blackberry Device

Posted: Thursday, February 20th, 2014 by admin

This article shows you how to activate your Blackberry device.  It will also show you how to backup you device and how to wipe it.  Before activating your Blackberry device so that it will be able to receive email from Lanlogic’s hosted email service, you will need to wipe your device.  Before doing so you should back up your Blackberry and any applications or media that you currently have stored on the device.  Wiping your BlackBerry will cause the device revert to default “factory”, or out-of-the-box settings.

While Lanlogic cannot offer support for the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software, what follows are some steps for running a backup of your BlackBerry device.  If you are having trouble backing up your device, please refer to Research In Motion’s support website:  http://us.blackberry.com/support.html.

To backup your Blackberry device:

Make sure you are running the latest version of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software.  It can be downloaded from their website:  http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html

Connect your Blackberry via a USB cable to your computer.  Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager (it may open automatically when you connect your device). Click the Back Up icon on the upper right (or choose Device > Back Up Data).  From the pop-up menu choose All Data.  Select a file name and a location to save your backup to, then click on Back Up.

That’s it! You’ll see a progress bar as your device is backing up. When it’s finished you’ll have a backup of all your important personal data (not including 3rd party applications) that you can hold onto in case something should happen down the road.  Now that our Blackberry data has been backed up, we can move forward with wiping the Blackberry.

Wiping your Blackberry

Note:  Performing a hard reset removes all data including the email account, system data, app data, app settings, and downloaded apps (but we will only be removing the email account). Prior to wiping the handheld, ensure there is a recent backup of the data.
